NORTH CANTERBURY REGIONAL TASTING

PINOT NOIR 2023 - “Alluring floral scents. In the mouth it’s all urgency and movement – “I have a story to tell” – red fruit with a savoury edge, underpinned by arrow-straight, insistent acidity. The frame is light, the back palate long. A fascinating, irrepressible wine.” — John Saker

THREE TO TRY

"Textbook strawberries and cream on the nose lure you into the glass with the Waitara wine, which is light yet richly textured and moreish”

SUMMER’S COMING

A pale copper colour that verges on gold in the glass, this is a Rosé that doesn’t fit the mould -in the best way. Ripe fruit sits alongside a creamy lees character on the nose and the palate is rich and complex with a satisfying contemplative finish.

SELF RESTORATION

When Kim Schofield took on the challenge of restoring old-growth vines at Dancing Water Winery, she was, in many ways, taking a brush to canvas to paint a picture of the land and community around her. This started with the wine itself. Kim, viticulturist Dr David Jordan, and the wine-making team were passionate about capturing the natural essence of the 30-year-old vines, treating each vintage like a work of art.

AN AGE OLD CONNECTION

Dancing Water Wines, set in the heart of Waipara wine country, was full of overgrown vines that harboured a unique secret – they were New Zealand’s oldest living, ungrafted, dry-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines. “These vines form the foundation for the most beautiful and expressive wine, which truly represents the terroir at DW and reflects the incredible limestone soil, just like in Burgundy,” Kim says.

THE OTHER FACE OF RIESLING

Recognised as one of our 'Top 12 in the World’ this year, Dancing Water Scheurebe 2019 shines with its crystalline straw-yellow hue. Intense aromas of lychee, pineapple, mango, and elderberry lead to a moderately sweet palate with good volume. The sip is enriched by a balanced freshness that finishes with bright citrus notes, delivering a seductive strength.” — Ulrich Coleman
